step out of the boat
We all have a boat that we paddle around in – even if the boat is uncomfortable or scary, it’s still a familiar place with certain boundaries in which we go about our daily lives.
What does your boat look like —
- Are you comfortable?
- Do you feel like life is over and your dreams have expired?
- Are you questioning if God is still paying attention?
- Has your boat lost direction or drifted off-course?
Are you ready to launch out of the boat you’re in, or help your group learn how to walk with God through the storms of life? [contact me for 1:1 coaching or a workshop]
step forward
Every time we make a decision, achieve a goal, or move forward, the process of stepping out of the boat toward growing spiritually involves these 4 steps:
1. stand up [God speaks to me]
Stepping out of the boat begins by standing up and recognizing that God is speaking to you – and He speaks a number of ways: scripture, prayer and reflection, the people around us, situations and events, and wise counsel.
2. step out [I am ready to follow God]
Once you’ve heard God’s voice, examined what He’s said to you, and stood up to answer with eagerness – or maybe even some reservations – you’re ready to dip your toe into the water and start walking in hot pursuit of what God is calling you to do.
Key components: pray about everything, use your gifts and talents, establish a plan, identify and overcome obstacles, find an accountability partner, and be who and what God called you to be.
3. start walking [I walk in faith]
By this point, you are living outside the boat and walking on the water, eyes fixed on Jesus and the mission in front of you.
Key components: don’t let the world hold you back, spiritual warfare is real, expect the unexpected, and believe God has, is, and will equip you for the purpose He has called you.
4. storm growth [I trust God’s plan]
You already know life is not without trials…challenges…obstacles…hard days – and you may encounter more than a few as you set out to use your gifts, talents, ideas, thoughts, tasks and dreams God has inspired in you.
When it’s time to navigate through rough waters: retreat and seek God, rely on His strength, trust Him, and be open to His new plan.
† what next?
You might ask yourself, “What happens when God lays out a new plan?” The most simple answer is: you grab a hold of the new boat He’s steered you to, paddle around while you wrap your mind around your new calling, and then get ready to put your toe into the water and walk…and step forward will be here to encourage you along your journey.
spiritual practices
The best way to get to know God and His plans for you is to spend time with Him daily.
Carve out time in your schedule to practice spiritual disciplines like:
- Reading your Bible
- Praying
- Meditating through Centering Prayer
- Journaling
- Spend quiet time walking through a labyrinth or prayer garden
- Organize your schedule to create a Sabbath Day or Day of Rest
This is just a short list of ideas!
